Dear Sir, My late father, Douglas Gordon Wilson (20/11/1921 – 7/1/1988) served as an engineer with the Merchant Navy during the Second World War, but I only have a sketchy knowledge of his time at sea. I believe that he was deployed on ships owned by the then New Zealand Shipping Company, working on MV Orari (visiting South America in April 1944) and also visiting New York (June 1944) and Sydney, Australia.
My endeavours to find out more about his service, dates and places visited etc from the UK National Archives and MOD have drawn a blank. Are you able to help, perhaps pointing me in the right direction?
Many thanks, Mrs Jacqueline Karen Dennett

The Otaio i remember many years back when i seen her discharging at Newport Docks. When i worked one could see all ships moored up loading up or discharging. The year being 1959. In later years, i would see her dock. A credit to the company looking immaculate as she was not a frequent visitor. There was a tugboat skipper George Canning who would take a photo of each ship handled by his tug. Somewhere in my loft i have some projector film footage of this beautiful ship. One of my late uncles who worked for her Majesty Revenue and Customs based in London Docks probably went aboard. It is sad when a ship as this has served its duty sailing the high seas of the world. Unfortunately we will never see the likes of her again. My reasons for reaching out to you was due to being an avid viewer of YouTube and seeing a video of your company which mentioned the Otaio.

Hope you will like the painting that I have done of the M V Otaio as it depicts her leaving Newport Docks , from the lock gates sited on the right.
The course taking her into the river Usk estuary was supported by three Dunns towage tugs. The port side Captain Danny Lynch and starboard Captain George Canning with aft Captain Alan Powell, making her way into the Bristol Channel.
The far left is an island called the Steep Holm, with just above on the horizon the coast of Penarth. Further along the coast at Barry roads, the pilot will disembark handing command back to the master, as making her way across the seas.
I did see a photo of her when been sold, looking tired and neglected, not as before immaculate in presentation.
Kind Regards

1966/1967 ex Vindicatrix Training Ship/ Camp in Gloucestershire. Ships I was on SS Dorset - MV Surrey and MV Cumberland. ( French coast to Mombasa S E Africa Mauritius, small volcanic island of Reunion. ) amazing peoples. During my time In This Co I made up a crew in Melbourne Australia for a Lifeboat test ( whilst too young it require 11 men) I passed having been asked the Q, name all points of the Jib sail ( head foot luff leech tack clew throat peak) I also did not receive my helmsman certificate having passed by taking the helm for much more than 24 hours across three months at sea. The Pool man on end of journey came to sign off without and certificates. I would love to be given these two in my old age for my grand children 🙏 - Robert Bailey

Hi,
Yes I found it in the list now.
I will attach a copy of the picture to this and also one of the Haparangi which it actualy a post card sent to my uncle Frank Mills who in the late 50s and into the 60s was the NZ shipping companies board chauffeur in London, the car was a London Cab but grey not black so they didn't get flagged down all the time.
I have another connection the the NZ shipping company found by chance, my mother in law asked me to find out about her father who had emigrated to NZ in 1950 with her brother, her mother had died and she was left with her aunt. I found the father and brother travelled on the Rangitiki from the Port of London on 21 April 1950, sadly both father and son died early in the 60s, the son by a terrible farming accident.
I also have another connection to NZ shipping though much earlier, my great uncle Williem Henry Crocker moved to Gisborne NZ in the early 1900s, he became a skipper working for the sheep meat company there and was awarded the humane societies silver medal for his part in the rescue after a Schooner ran aground.
If you would like the originals of the pictures let me know where to send them, no body here will wan't them when I am gone.
Lawrence
