I was on the Rangitoto maiden voyage to NZ in 1949. It must have been built the year or two previously. It was all one class and in 50’s design with light woods. It was a wonderful experience after all the misery of real austerity after the war. I was 10. Jane Edmonds |

I started with NZS in 1959,my first ship was the Cambridge. The best one was the cadet ship Otaio. I finished in 1967, the company was taking butchers off ships and made life very hard as a ships cook. But at the same time I had had a great career and was on some great shops. Bob Taylor |

Also as part of P@O General Cargo Division the Strathbrora. I then joined Panocean Shipping and Terminals. James Mackenzie |

Listening to the ABC's country radio show this morning, I heard an interview with a fruiterer from Tasmania, who was discussing apples. This started a chain of long forgotten memories of the SS Dorset, New Zealand Shipping Line. It would have been around 1952-4 when I attended Hawes Down County Secondary School, in West Wickham, Kent that in our classroom was a large model of this vessel, made of matchboxes and cardboard. It wasn't long before the significant of this was discovered. Several crates of Tasmanian apples arrived, with compliments of the ship. The ship had adopted the school (or was it the other way around - I cannot recall now), but every time the ship docked in Southampton (?) we kids were very much spoilt. It was a lovely gesture, very much appreciated by us 11 year old kids. kind regards, Bob La Roche |

Wonder if you could locate a capacity plan, deck plan or full overhead aerial photograph of PIPIRIKI. I served on her as AB from 3rd July 1962 to 1st June 1963. What a great ship, good crowd all over and a brilliant cook, he refused to cook separately for the officers. We had a bit of a problem with one of the deck crew and had to get rid of him. This involved being threatened with the Mutiny Act while we were in Fremantle but with the great help of the dockers union we won through and all ended well. On that voyage we chipped her from top to bottom and were very proud of her and she received lots of compliments. John Hayward |

I came out to NZ on the RMS Rangitane in 1965 and wondered if you had a plan of passengers accommodation for this ship, or know where I might get one? I did see one on e-bay, but the old link went nowhere. Thanks Sue Wood |

For random reason decided to do a search for my old ship and found your amazing site! I started on the Haparangi late-60's as 2RO. I remember being told my first job was to find the CE and ask him for a long stand. He told me to wait there... and yep, I fell for it for 30 mins. Then we left port and I got my first taste of wanna-die seasick. I would have got off the ship stuff the consequences but they kindly gave me a bucket and put me on watch. I learned fast about this new family I had joined. About mid 69 I joined Paparoa as senior RO. Unfortunately I needed emerg surgery in Auckland which put an end to my career. I was repatriated to the UK as a passenger on the Hinakura. I have to say that NZSC were beyond reproach in looking after me. I feel priveleged to have worked for them even for a short time. I was given a medical clearance about 3 years later and did a spell of freelancing for various international lines before settling on a subcontract with Blue Star Lines on the UK-NZ freezer trade before. I have a piece of equipment, the Ralston Indicator, from the MV Hertford (1948). I'm trying to learn more about the vessel, particularly her disposition. The last record of a voyage I could find was from April 1957 Lyttelton to Liverpool under the ownership of James Dowie & Company Ltd. I located this information about her construction: VICKERS ARMSTRONG (SHIPBUILDERS) LTD BUILT AT THE NAVAL SHIPYARD WALKER-ON-TYNE Yard No: 106 Name: MV "Hertford" Owners: Federal SN Co Type: Refrig Cargo Liner Year Built: 1948 Any additional information you could provide would be appreciated. Hi Jeff, Thanks for getting back to me. Ive seen some of the auction results for other Ralston Indicators, and based on those I would not be interested in selling. I'm in the process of repairing and cleaning it up and may donate or loan it to one of our local maritime centers. That is why I'm trying to establish more of the Hertford's history. I've made some progress since my initial correspondence by locating a report in the 1974 Marine Observer from Captain A. Britain reporting a force 6 connditions and a large pod of dolphin. That is currently her last known disposition. I also found the newspaper announcement of her maiden voyage in 1949 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/163830651Any information on her disposition or other voyages of note would be appreciated. Best, Ian |

Can anyone help me with a voyage list (ports of call) for MV Haparangi in 1959, my Late father sailed on her from Glasgow, departing 26th March 1959, returning to UK Cardiff 7th October 1959. He always said he was in New York on the 8th of September that year? So I have 3 ports at least. I would be most grateful for any assistance with this. Gary Anson | gary.anson59atoutlook.com

I sailed on the MV Hertford as a Sparks in 1959/60 to New Zealand from London and Glasgow, through a north atlantic hurricane, via the panama canal. Visited south and north Island ports to unload two locomotives and crates of whisky. Crashed into Littleton oil wharf in a hail storm. Played soccer and won the Auckland Shield. Shipped lamb to New Jersey and Montreal passing rthrough Caribbean during Cuba crisis. In New York for snow storm Christmas. Left sea voyaging and became chartered accountant in London then transferred to Sydney where married in 1972. John Seddon |

I am looking for any information about my grandfather Thomas Wilson DOB 23.9.1893 who served on Rangitiki as a steward. He drowned in Auckand Harbour in service on 30.3.1954. I have his death certificate and am about to visit his grave in NZ in November (from UK). I would to hear anything about him as he died before I was born. Many thanks.
